Solo: Beyond the sea
This piece is divided into three sections:
I. Schools of Fish Swimming:
II. Unfolding Among the Waves:
III. Days at Sea
The overall creative concept is based on the poem "On the Sea" by Hai Zi, while the melodic motifs are drawn from the traditional Cantonese folk song "Falling into the Water."
In the first part, the tremolo of the double bass is used to depict the swimming posture of fish in the water and the ripples on the surface, while presenting thematic fragments in a fragmented and motif-based manner.
The second part sees the music beginning to flow, with extensive use of legato passages and interspersed long melodic lines. Contrasts between high and low notes accompany the continuous lines, eventually forming blocks of fierce waves.
In the third part, the complete Cantonese folk song "Falling into the Water" is presented, but with extensive use of breathing pauses to create a "yiyiya" humming effect, reminiscent of the distant and ethereal singing of fishermen drifting through the sea breeze.
